London is one of the most historical and
popular cities on the face of the earth. There is an endless supply of
things to do there and places to see and this is why so many people
visit more than once. England’s and the United kingdom’s capital city
is home to about eight million people and is the largest metropolitan
area in the country. However, many people aren’t aware that the actual
‘City of London’ is just a small square mile area in the core of
greater London, which sits in the financial district.
London offers numerous historical sites, buildings, and monuments, as
well as world-class museums, restaurants, theatres, and galleries,
etc. Just about everywhere you look and every corner you turn you’ll
come face to face with another famous attraction. And the bonus is
that you can actually walk from site to site to see most of them as
they’re relatively close to each other. If
you need to travel a bit of a distance you can hop a ride on a
double-decker bus, a black taxi or go underground to ride the famous
‘tube’ subway system. Once you’re there it’s a piece of cake getting
around and it’s just as easy getting into London as it has two major
international airports in Heathrow and Gatwick, which are linked to
the city by rail and underground. All areas
of London come with their own unique history and charm and offer an
abundance of arts and culture. Some of the best places to visit are
Tower Bridge, the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, the Tower of London,
Buckingham Palace, the London Eye, Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar
Square, Westminster Abbey, and the Royal Botanical Gardens, Hyde Park,
Canary Wharf, and The Royal Albert Hall, and so on and so on. There’s
not enough time in the day to visit everything and when you think
you’ve seen it all, something new pops up.
The city is a melting pot of cultures and you can actually walk for
miles in the town without hearing English being spoken. The mixture of
different religions, cultures and ethnicities is what makes London
such an interesting and vibrant place. You will hear languages from
all over the world and can taste cuisine from all over the world.
However, a trip to London wouldn’t seem right without a portion of
fish and chips and a pint of lager or ale in a local pub.
The architecture in the city is a well-balanced mixture of the old and
new as ancient churches sit next to modern structures. The arts are a
huge part of London as people flock to see live stage performances
every day. These include plays, musicals, operas, and, concerts. The
city is like a who’s who of the music scene as every major act in the
world will stop in while touring. For those who prefer literature,
history, and art galleries there are numerous museums and libraries to
visit. The city is also the Mecca of
fashion and shopping and you’ll find plenty of excellent examples of
each, such as the famous Harrods department store and Oxford Street.
Of course, the English love their sports, and London is home to
numerous professional soccer teams as well as world championship
boxing matches, motor racing, rugby, rowing, and cricket among others.
More people than ever will be heading to the city in the summer of
2012 as London will be hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The city of London has withstood a lot throughout its history and it
seems that nothing will ever destroy the spirit, heart, and character
of this great city. |
